The missing piece is usually the first decision
A recognizable character and a usable opening are different assets. “An adult librarian with silver hair” gives an image a direction. It gives a reader almost nothing to do. “A librarian has found two contradictory photographs and asks which date to trust” creates a conversation.
This is the useful way to compare FunFun AI and Doki Chat. We reviewed their public creation surfaces on 15 October 2026. We did not create a character, use paid models or measure how faithfully either service follows a brief.
What is actually visible
The FunFun AI creator displays seven stages, beginning with name, age band, eyes and hair. Its published creator form also defines personality, occupation, up to three hobbies and clothing selectors. These are broad character choices rather than evidence that the product is only a portrait tool. We inspected the served form; no character was submitted and no paid conversation was tested.
The Dokichat form separates public information, personality, opening dialogue and advanced settings. The opening group includes a backstory and first message. That is a concrete advantage for a writer who wants to keep the public invitation separate from the information used to shape the character.
| Piece of the project | Its job | A useful authoring choice |
|---|---|---|
| Visual identity | Help a reader recognize the character | A few stable details rather than a dense inventory |
| Personality | Explain how the character tends to act | A motive and a habitual way of speaking |
| Backstory | Make the situation understandable | Facts that explain the current problem |
| First message | Invite participation now | One unanswered question with two plausible directions |
Put the same concept into two different working briefs
Consider Morgan, a fictional 32-year-old librarian preparing an exhibition. The public invitation might say that Morgan needs help identifying an old photograph. The personality brief could explain that Morgan asks concise questions and dislikes confident guesses. The backstory can establish that two records disagree.
The first message should then expose the disagreement. It should not narrate the reader agreeing to help, discovering the answer or feeling attracted to Morgan. Leaving those responses open gives the reader agency and makes the next turn easier to write.
For a visually led setup, first decide which appearance details are essential. Keep the narrative brief separately so that adjusting an eye color does not accidentally become the entire character-design process. Where a service provides a relevant text field, adapt the brief to that field rather than copying one long paragraph everywhere.
This is an editorial planning exercise, not a claim that either system produced the example successfully.
Publishing changes the decision
Doki Chat’s creation rules distinguish Original, Partially Original and Fanwork. They currently reserve search and recommendation eligibility for Original characters. Correct classification therefore matters to a creator hoping other readers will discover the work; “I wrote the dialogue” does not automatically make borrowed character art fully original.
FunFun’s web terms describe personal use and restrictions on its intellectual property. Do not confuse access to an existing character with a license to copy that character, its artwork or the platform interface.
The choice
Use the visibly structured Dokichat fields when your project starts with an authored opening and a publishing decision. Inspect FunFun when your starting point is an appearance-led companion concept, while keeping a separate scene brief. Neither path removes the need to give the character a purpose or proves that the resulting dialogue will remain consistent.
